Keep Your Cookout Fun and Safe for Your Pup

When the weather warms up, there’s nothing better than firing up the grill and gathering friends and family for a summer barbecue. And, of course, our dogs want to be part of the fun, too! But while the smell of burgers and hot dogs might get tails wagging, backyard cookouts can come with hidden dangers for our furry friends.

Whether you’re hosting a big party or just grilling with family, here are some simple tips to keep your dog safe and happy during barbecue season:

Keep Dogs Away from Hot Grills
It’s no surprise that dogs love to follow their noses—especially when tasty meat is sizzling! But curious pups can easily get too close to hot grills, coals, or open flames. Make sure your dog stays at a safe distance and never leave a hot grill unattended.

Be Careful with Table Scraps
Many common barbecue foods can upset your dog’s stomach or even be dangerous. Cooked bones can splinter, corn cobs can cause blockages, and foods like onions or fatty meats can make dogs very sick. Instead, have a few dog-safe treats on hand so your pup can enjoy a special snack without the risk.

Create a Comfy Chill Zone
Barbecues can get busy and noisy—so give your dog a cool, shady place to relax. Set up a blanket or bed under a tree or patio umbrella and make sure they have plenty of fresh water. Nervous dogs benefit from a social break in their crate. A secluded room makes for a great place to decompress in a crate.

Secure the Trash
Dogs are notorious for sniffing out leftovers! Keep trash bags and food scraps sealed and out of reach to avoid dangerous scavenging. Skewers, foil, and food wrappers can be choking hazards or cause digestive trouble.

Watch the Doors and Gates
With guests coming and going, it’s easy for an excited dog to slip out an open gate or door. Make sure fences are secure and remind guests to keep an eye out when entering or leaving the yard.

Enjoy Summer Safely!
A little preparation goes a long way to keep your dog safe while you enjoy good food and great company. With these simple barbecue safety tips, your pup can be part of the fun—without any unwanted trips to the vet.
